New Years Bliss

New York flirtWhat to do for New Year when you feel out on a limb and either have no parties to go to or have plenty of invites but just prefer to stay home. Well there are so many things to do. Not only do we need to say goodbye to the old but we also need to say a big cheerful hello to the new.  Walter Baumhofer 1950s kichFirst look back at all the things that went wrong in the year that’s been and make peace with yourself and with those you may find difficult to forgive.  This is tough but we need to reflect and move on if we are to be in a good state to welcome in the new year. Next send your love to those who have passed over and are no longer with you in person.  Feel their presence and if you feel only love for them that is what you will receive in return. Next give to yourself only and smother yourself in fragrant oils, decorate your home with the things you love, surround yourself with photos of friends, family and pets and finally light a candle and meditate.1940s porch After you have meditated and feel relaxed make yourself a yummy snack or even a meal, and sip on the martini which you have just created. Put your feet up , turn on the tele and watch an old movie.  For this ambience to work it is imperative that you turn off your mobile phone. Something funny or romantic. Gaysisters Stanwyck A drama is O.K. too but nothing too heavy.  At midnight while you are watching the fireworks either on tele or from your house make your resolutions.  See how some fireworks evaporate and others disperse?  Well think of all your old worries and fears evaporating and all your hopes for the future dispersing and becoming part of the universe.  Remember the universe always gives back.  romance for betty bourgeoiseThen half an hour before you prepare for bed draw something, make a collage from photos or write a little poem. Do this by hand.  Forget about the computer for one night. cropped-hollywood-canteen-ticket1.jpgPlace it somewhere visible so that on New Years Day you will know that you made New Years Eve count and you will make the New Year count.  Because you count.  This is the secret to New Year Bliss.

Hollywood Sex Appeal 1930s ( Pre Code )

mae-westThe Hollywood censorship code was not actually properly enforced until 1934. Up to that time promiscuity on screen was accepted for the most part.  Drugs, marital affairs, gambling were just as rampant in society then as they are now. The sirens of the silver screen played vamps, vixens and even thieves with great flair. Mae West and Cary GrantThey weren’t afraid to speak their minds or reveal their flesh either. Probably leading the pack in the naughty corner was the scintillating and extremely daring Mae West who made a living out of selling sex appeal on stage only.   All was temptation.  No sex involved. Her one liners were a classic and are widely quoted even today.  “Is that a gun in your pocket or are you just glad to see me”? was one of her most famous quips.  Mae was a shrewd business woman and controlled all aspects of her productions.  She also wrote the scripts.  Unique in the 30s to be a woman in charge of the men she worked with.  Jean Harlow was another. Harlow  Tough on the outside but soft as marshmallow on the inside.  She was always the gal from the wrong side of the tracks who somehow manages to make good.  Like Mae West she played a good vamp and always glammed it up for the camera. She often starred with Clark Gable and the chemistry between them was sizzling.  She was the temptress and he the masculine foil to her sarcasm.  Trying so hard to resist her allure but finding it difficult to remain aloof for long.  Gable and HarlowShe would eventually win out with her lovely combination cunning and sweetness.  What was a guy to do?  Joan Crawford too could heat up the screen with raw sex appeal and she definitely did not suffer fools lightly.  Joan was a leading lady alright. Grand_hotel_trailer_crawford_beery Men would literally follow her into the great abyss is she so wanted.  Men found her irresistable probably because she was so like them in the ways her characters thought and acted.  There were many others too too numerous to mention who pushed the sexy, sultry screen siren to the limits.  The films in which they appeared dealt with issues which broke the moral codes of society and often shocked the sensibilities of the audience.joan-crawford-1930s-  Films like ‘Baby Face’ with Barbara Stanwyck where the character is molested by her father and goes on to seek revenge on all men or ‘Grand Hotel’ with Crawford playing a secretary who sleeps with her boss in order to get ahead. Barbara Stanwyck in nylon By the 1940s following the war characters were not allowed to share the same bed on film and women rarely sassed.  For more info on individual stars and on scenes from their films see ‘GreatGaffes.com. with articles by Gabby Du Gaffe.
