Loretta Young and the virtues of vice

Loretta YoungLoretta Young was a lovely actress with big doe eyes.  She could be tough, demure and headstrong all at the same time.   Her roles would include housewives, femme fatales and even female pilots. Loretta Young 'The Farmer's Daughter' Loretta’s films were indeed varied and generally of a very high calibre.  A devoted Catholic all her life Loretta chose to play characters who portrayed moral virtues.  Films such as ‘The bishop’s wife where she is the faithful yet neglected wife of a clergyman befriended by an angel ( cary Grant ) and ‘The Farmers Daughter’ in which she plays a maid  to an extremely wealthy family revered for her honesty and integrity who becomes involved in politics ( Hmmm interesting. )  For this role she won an oscar. ( Even more interesting. )  The year was 1948.  Her life was often reflected in the films she made and her moral virtue was not always true to the values of The Catholic church.   In 1930 at the age of 17 she found herself pregnant and eloped with the father. An actor named Grant Withers.  He was 26 and should have been arrested. lorettayoung' Born To Be Bad'They married in Yuma and although the marriage was annulled a year later they made a film together.  Ironically the film was titled ‘ Too Young To Marry’.

Young made ‘Call Of The Wild’ with Clark Gable in 1935 and the two had an affair.  She again fell pregnant and fearing the damage it would do to her career ran away to England to have the baby which she had adopted out. MBDCAOF FE014 A year later she adopted the child as her own and the child’s real father remained a secret.  Prior to this affair with Gable she had made a film called ‘Born To Be Bad’ about an unwed mother who “entertains” wholesale buyers to gain contracts for the mob.  In the film her son is run down by a company president who she then sues for damages.  The film again co stars Cary Grant. This character is against type and lacks moral scruples, making her son tell lies in court and seducing the company president, in an attempt to break up his marriage and discredit him.

Loretta’s colourful life seemed to be on the straight and narrow when she married producer ‘ Tom Lewis’ in 1940 but the marriage ended in a very bitter divorce in the sixties.  They had embarked on a joint production, ‘The Loretta Young Show’, which had become a power struggle.  For years they battled in court over the money made from the show and Loretta also sued the producers for not updating the gowns she wore in the opening credits. 'The Loretta Young Show' Loretta won. ladies-courageous-loretta-young-1944-everett She certainly had courage.  Just like the character she played in the 1944 film ‘Ladies Courageous’.  A female pilot who joins the WAFS during WW11  and ferries aircraft parts across the Pacific by plane.  Not courageous enough , however, to acknowledge her biological daughter as her own. Then again she saved not only her own career but also that of Gable and where would we be without him. I wonder?

Cheers Dears!

Vintage Hollywood Christmas

Holiday InnWe all dream of a white Christmas with Bing Crosby crooning, sleigh bells ringing and a Christmas tree that soars up high into the heavens glittering and gleaming with bright shiny baubles.
We dream of a 40s Christmas listChristmas where we run around throwing snowballs while building snowmen, where we line up Christmas stockings in front of a warm cozy fireplace or where we sneak out when everyone else is asleep to wrap up that secret gift in pretty paper tied with red and gold ribbons to hide under the tree. Miracle On 34th St We may all dream of this kind of Christmas yet many of us may never experience it.  There are those who just don’t celebrate it at all because it is not their thing and there are those who cannot either because they are alone, poor or homeless.

In some cases this sort of Christmas is impossible because the weather is way too hot for snowmen like here in Australia.  Enter Hollywood.  Every year there are loads of Christmas themed movies which people love to go see so they can fuel themselves with the Christmas spirit.

janet-leigh-christmas There are not many, however, that can even come close to the classic vintage Christmas movies of old.  I speak of Judy Garland singing ‘Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas’ in ‘Meet Me In Saint Louis’, ‘Holiday Inn’ with Bing Crosby singing the iconic ‘I’m Dreaming Of A White Christmas’ or ‘Miracle On 34th Street’ with child star Natalie Wood setting out to prove that Santa Clause really exits.

Then there were the publicity photos of the stars promoting Christmas cheer and endorsing the must have products of the day. Miracle On 34th; Faith is ...... The magic of Christmas always seemed more so when when Hollywood jumped on board.  Christmas messages of love, faith, joy, hope and family togetherness were the Hollywood themes for the Christmas period back then.  Promoting the dream was the way people got through. So let’s all dream a little eh and maybe the magic will come back.

Busby Berkley Choreography of the 1930s

ABerkeley, Busby (42nd Street)

.Ginger Rogers.......Busby Berkeley was the man responsible for all that wonderful choreography we see in those glamorous films of the 1930s.  Lot’s of beautiful girls in rows or stacked on top of each other.  He would create giant sets with hundreds of scantily clad beauties, smiling faces, arms outstretched, legs extended , parading in front of a camera mounted on a monorail.  They were grouped in formations to create moving patterns which could weave in and out of the sets.

42nd street Some of the sets were pretty spectacular too. Whole city blocks were represented together with lavish gardens and swimming pools. Berkeley worked with some of the biggest stars of the day as well as being responsible for the establishment of some fresh new faces.PoolJump1FootlightParade33 Annex - Keeler, Ruby (Go Into Your Dance)_NRFPT_01

Ruby Keeler was probably one of the greatest discoveries of the 1930s and her clumsy hoofer appeal was all the rage.  Ruby could dance up a storm on her own and yet still complement the line up without standing out too much on a limb.  She and Dick Powell danced their way through ‘Footlight Parade’ and ’42ndStreet’ to an audience base dogged by the great depression and brought good cheer to all. Keeler and Powell Gold Diggers 33 Other films included ‘Zeigfeld Follies with Lana Turner, Judy Garland and Hedy Lamar which was, of course, a winner.  With a cast like that how could it not be?Turner, Lana (Ziegfeld Girl)

Who better to work with lines of chorus girls than Busby Berkeley  just as Zeigfeld had done in his hey day.  It was Busby, however, who added dance to what had traditionally been just lines of gorgeous gals in glamorous costumes.  Lamarr, Hedy (Ziegfeld Girl)Rows of men in tuxedos were also added and they danced too. 1933-gold-diggers-forgotten-manBusby Berkeley was apparently married six times but these marriages didn’t last long as he was very close to his mother who was herself a former broadway star and a hoofer to boot. Pardon the pun.  In 1935 he was driving whilst drunk and crashed.  Two people died as a result and Berkeley was charged with manslaughter. His career was put on hold for the duration of the trial but continued to flourish afterwards. Annex - Powell, Dick (Gold Diggers of 1935)_01He turned to directing and was equally as successful with films including ‘ They Made Me A Criminal’ with John Garfield one of Garfield’s best films.  It was always going to be the musicals, however, in which Berkeley excelled and to this very day he is revered as one of the greatest choreographers ever both in film and on the Broadway stage.

So for all you hoofers out there look out for the musicals of the 1930s when Berkeley was in full swing, put on your taps and dance.

8: Learn how to walk in stilettos  no matter what the occasion.  A great tip is to cut a little off the heal of one shoe so that you’ll have a permanent sway when you walk.  This will ensure you millionaire snare will love you even back to front .  This trick was invented by Marilyn Monroe who knew all about millionaires.
