Betty’s tips on how to Beguile In Style

Well here it is a new year and a new you or maybe a newer version of the old you with a few nips and tucks here and there. So what are you going to do this year to make the necessary improvements you need in your every day life? Any ideas? Well tell you what , I myself , was always partial to a splash of colour. Give me bright yellow,orange and red mixed with rustic tapioca beige and lemon lime swirl. Ah what a mix for an uptown girl. Happy colours. The colours of positive energy. Oh and did I mention pink and black? Also terribly chic!

It’s time to spruce up the bathroom so you can create your very own beauty parlour. Your own special place to pamper and preen. To make yourself over in style. Pluck your brows into the perfect arch, colour your hair honey blonde, wild red or deep auburn brown. How bout blue raven? Hmmm …. very cool. Anyway darlings don’t forget the lips. Pucker up and apply your favourite shade of the latest colour trend. As for the lashes. Make them lush so you can flutter them when he comes to call. A nice thick mascara should do the trick. Oh and don’t forget the liner. It’s the Liz Taylor look. And we all know what a celebrated beauty she was. The when you are finished in your little beauty parlour you can move to that lovely boudoire decked out in cool blue … and pink of course. Here you can sit at your pretty dresser in a lovely silken gown and spend forever brushing your newly dyed tresses.

Next it’s choosing what to wear. Should you wear quirky,slinky or sensible? High cut, low cut or in between? Long , short or knee bees? Tight, loose or flowy and showy? What a dilemma? My advice is to go with the flow. Wear what suits you not what everyone else is wearing. You are yourself! Unique in every way. Oh and there’s no end to what you can achieve with the right accessories. Complement your outfit with a hat that sports just a touch of the colour of your chosen ensemble. In the evening ensure that you are wearing just the right touch of … No Way … No how…. I don’t ring a ding ding without the ring. Stick to your guns and pretty soon he’ll be all yours. If that’s your raison d’etre ma cher.
So let a little colour into your life and beguile them with your style. Whether at home, out on the town or in the office you’ll make an impression.

Classic Christmas Film Tribute

Love these old films especially in black and white. ‘Since You Went Away’ with Claudette Colbert,Shirley Temple and Jennifer Jones is about a single mum with two girls who takes in a surprising boarder into the house to make ends meet. It’s war time and her husband is away on duty. A real family film with alot of heart.

The Shop Around The Corner with James Stewart and Maureen O’sullavan is so good it was remade three times. With Judy Garland in the 50s ‘Good Old Summertime’ and Meg Ryan in the 90s ‘You’ve Got Mail’.The film is about two loneley hearts who work in the same department store but actually can’t stand each other. Each has a pen pal that they write letters to. Romance blossoms in these letters. They do not realise that they are really writing the love letters to each other. One night a blind date is arranged at the cafe in the shop around the corner. Hence the title.

‘The Gaye Sisters’ with Barbara Stanwyck has her trying desperately to prevent the family home which she shares with her two sisters from being sold to developers after her parents die. She is a divorcee with a son that her ex husband doesn’t know about yet it is to the ex that she must turn for help in saving the estate. He’s a brilliant lawyer and charming to boot. Played by the delectable George Brent.

‘I’ll Be Seeing You’ stars Ginger Rogers as state prisoner released on a good behaviour bond to her sister and brother in law for the Christmas period. She meets a soldier on leave played by Joseph Cotton and naturally is afraid to tell him the truth. These two are quite an intense pairing but the film works.

This one is not black and white but is totally worthy of being called a classic Christmas movie. ‘All This and Heaven Too’ starring Rock Hudson and Jane Wyman. A real weepie and terribly romantic. It’s about a widow living in a lovely big house all alone in the lead up to Christmas who hires a gardener. The gardener is tall , dark and handsome Rock Hudson. Gradually they begin to fall for each other which worries her neighbours and friends. He’s not quite in their league. Even her grown up children try to sabotage the relationship.

‘By The Light Of The Silvery Moon’ Doris Day and Gordon MaCRae. A real boy meets girl,boy loses girl ,boy get’s girl movie. Great for the whole family and also in full technicolour. Doris plays a tomboy girl who loves climbing trees and fixing cars. Her boyfriend finds her a little embarrassing. They have a fight and she flirts with someone else to make him jealous. The plan is not fool proof, however, and their relationship becomes quite an obstacle course.

These are just a few but there are many many more not on this list. I’m adding some other classic movie stills here for you to look up over the holiday period. Happy viewing to one and all.

A kiss under the mistletoe is indeed romantic as is decorating the tree and wrapping gifts together. A time to dress up in your best vintage number and really impress with your impeccable style.

Christmas is great for new romance because everything is bubbly , bright and cheerful … right? Well that’s what we all hope for but in reality Christmas can be a bit of let down to those whose expectations are a little too high.So play it cool. Show your hearts desire how clever you are at entertaining. This will go a long way to making him an ardent admirer with eyes for none but you.

He will not be able to resist you provided you have made the Christmas cake, baked the Christmas turkey, set the table perfectly, wined and dined the guests, cleaned up the kitchen and made sure there is still some grog left for a nice tete a tete followed by ….. bells?
