Jezebels and Scarlett Ohara

Gone With The WindThe casting for Gone With The Wind is legend with David O Selznick  finally settling on a complete unknown poised in front of the burning embers of Atlanta.  Vivienne Leigh was perfect.  Delicate yet fiercely determined, gentle yet defiantly steadfast, coquettish yet devioulsy cunning.  Scarlett-O-Hara-Vivien-Leigh-gifShe had all the attributes of the fiery Southern Belle Selznick had been searching for. He knew, from the moment he saw her, that he had found his Scarlett.  What a search it had been too.  Every actress in Hollywood wanted that role including Bette Davis, Joan Crawford, Catherine Hepburn, and even Hedy Lamarr.  The main contender for the role was none of these however and Paulette Goddard had become the front runner. Goddard was married to Charlie Chaplin and had made quite an impression in her first film with him ‘Modern Times’.   She was gamine and feisty and her screen test for ScarletPrior to Goddard many others had been considered. ScarlettGoddard Scarlett against fireSome never heard of before or since outside Hollywood circles.  Selznick was determined to use a virtual unknown because he did not want audiences to be able to compare Scarlett with any other  character or star seen on film.  He considered Ellen Drew, Anita Louise, Halia Stoddard who was predominantly a stage actress, Dianna Barrymore , daughter of John Barrymore  and Margaret Tallichet.  Who were all these wanna be Scarlet’s well may you ask?  Turns out they were all quite well known in their day by those that mattered in Tinsel Town.  Many were given other Southern Belle rolls to compensate for the loss of Scarlett.  Jezebel posterBette Davis made ‘Jezebel’ with Henry Fonda in which like Scarlett Oharra she wears red to the ball in defiance of etiquette and plays hard to get with the man she truly loves.

Poster 'Sins Of Jezebel'

Paulette Goddard much later starred in’ The Sins Of Jezebel’. It stands to reason as the character of Scarlett , who steals hearts only to disguard them when the time suits her, is actually loosley based on the Jezebel of the bible.  Like the biblical Jezebel Scarlett loves to dress in all her finery and makes sure she is fully made up before facing up to whatever obstacle stands in her way.  Defiant to the last.

Margaret Tallichet was actually married to William Wyler who was a major player.  Margaret Tallichet GWTW

Anita Louise apparently gave fabulous Hollywood parties and was on first name basis with the A list. Anita Louise

Ellen Drew pose GWTWEllen Drew was the beautiful starlett  every one wanted to know.  Which of these would you have chosen as a serious contender?

Betty’s tips on how to Beguile In Style

jungle red nailsWell here it is a new year and a new you or maybe a newer version of the old you with a few nips and tucks here and there.  1950s lemon ang green bathroomSo what are you going to do this year to make the necessary improvements you need in your every day life?  Any ideas?  Well tell you what , I myself , was always partial to a splash of colour.  Give me bright yellow, orange and red mixed with rustic tapioca beige and lemon lime swirl.  Ah what a mix for an uptown girl.  Happy colours.  The colours of positive energy.  Oh and did I mention pink and black?  Also terribly chic! retro bath

It’s time to spruce up the bathroom so you can create your very own beauty parlour.  Your own special place to pamper and preen.  To make yourself over in style.  Pluck your brows into the perfect arch, colour your hair honey blonde, wild red or deep auburn brown.  How bout blue raven?  Hmmm …. very cool.  Anyway darlings don’t forget the lips.  Pucker up and apply your favourite shade of the latest colour trend. 5os dresser As for the lashes.  Make them lush so you can flutter them when he comes to call.  A nice thick mascara should do the trick.  Oh and don’t forget the liner.  It’s the Liz Taylor look.  And we all know what a celebrated beauty she was.  The when you are finished in your little beauty parlour you can move to that lovely boudoire decked out in cool blue … and pink of course.  Here you can sit at your pretty dresser in a lovely silken gown and spend forever brushing your newly dyed tresses.

Next it’s choosing what to wear.  Should you wear quirky, slinky or sensible?  High cut, low cut or in between?  Long , short or knee bees?  Tight, loose or flowy and showy? 50s Paris What a dilemma?  My advice is to go with the flow.  Wear what suits you not what everyone else is wearing.  You are yourself!  Unique in every way.  Oh and there’s no end to what you can achieve with the right accessories. Complement your outfit with a hat that sports just a touch of the colour of your chosen ensemble. Kiss me you fool In the evening ensure that you are wearing just the right touch of … No Way … No how….  I don’t ring a ding ding without the ring.  Stick to your guns and pretty soon he’ll be all yours.  If that’s your raison d’etre ma cher.
So let a little colour into your life and beguile them with your style.  Whether at home, out on the town or in the office you’ll make an impression.

Sydney City Of Old

New Yr 2015

Yes folks we have history right here in Sydney. pitt Street Sydney We also have plenty of hidden gems. Old city streets that were once hip and happening that have now been turned into shopping malls.harbour bridge Lot’s of little lane ways once luring the unsuspecting with the promise of buried treasure now harbour slick night clubs and grand hotels. Once surrounded by lush gardens many of our city gems now wait to go under the hammer of eager developers. Still a great city.  Always growing.

Reaching for the stars with it’s deck chaired roof tops and it’s ever climbing sky scrapers.  Sydney is an enigma. A city that never gives up.  Here then is a pictorial tribute to a city I will always love.  Below from left to right  ‘Vogue Theatre Surrey Hills, street crowd in ‘The Rocks’ during the depression, jewellery store 1930s, Directing traffic George Street, Tram passes QVB. Building the post office Martin Place, ushers at ‘The State Theatre, plane flying over incomplete Harbour Bridge, Actors taking an encore after Theatre Performance during WW11, City trams on George, Chorus girls State Theatre, David Jones around 1920.  We were always a class act.

Sydney is a cosmopolitan city and fully deserves it’s reputation as one of the most beautiful cities in the world.  Over the New Year holiday Sydney siders will do as they’ve always done.  They will promenade the city streets, hang out at the beach and take long lunches.

Sydney we  salute You !
