Ava Gardner – Woman Of Mystery

Hollywood was tantalised by Ava Gardner. A raven haired beauty who had talent ,style and grit.  She had to have the latter and plenty of it to deal with hubby number three Frank Sinatra who had more than enough grit of his own.  Ava GardnerAva played the vixen who had been hard done by and often had an axe to grind in many of her films. In film noir she was the mysterious tough cookie who just wanted to be loved. Her first big break was in ‘The Killers’ with Burt Lanchaster. She was also very good at playing exotic types who didn’t belong but wanted to be accepted into the social elite. Film noir Lanchaster & GardinerBecause of her looks Ava was often chosen to play half castes. Notably in Bhowani Junction’ in which she plays a half caste Indian and in ‘Showboat’ where she is supposed to be black passing for white.  She was perhaps to her best advantage when playing a Spaniard as in ‘The Barefoot Contessa’ as there is a strong possibility that this was her actual heritage even though her family background could only be traced to England.  Ava married Micky Rooney ( A very odd couple ) and Artie Shaw ( who seemed to marry everybody ) before Sinatra. ava and Frankava-gardner-and-mickey-rooney-after-their-wedding-january-1942After Sinatra she never married again but did have a long running affair with Howard Hughes and with Ernest Hemingway who cast her in ‘The Sun Also Rises’. To Ava no -one could measure up to Frank with whom she enjoyed an extremely volatile relationship. She smoked like a chimney and died of pneumonia at the age of 67 in 1990.

Barbara Stanwyck from orphan to Hollywood Star

barbara-stanwyck-398278_1280

Barbara Stanwyck was one of the Hollywood greats on equal par with Bette Davis and Joan Crawford though not given the same cult status.  Adopted at the age of four after her mother was thrown out of a train carriage and her father disappeared later to be found working on the Panama Canal.  Her name was Ruby back then and she had a younger brother, Byron, and an older sister Mildred.  After the funeral Mildred who was only five years older went to work as a chorus girl to support her siblings. George Brent and Stanwyck Stanwyck smokes like chimney Ruby and Byron spent years in and out of Foster homes when Mildred had to go interstate.  At the age of fourteen Ruby ran away from one of the foster homes and followed her on tour.  She would apparently mimmic her sister’s moves backstage and dreamed of some day becoming a star herself.  Stanwyck in 1942.pgbarbara-stanwyck Golden Boy Thersa Harris and Barbara StanwyckMeantime, however, she had to compensate herself with dreary office jobs.  She auditioned for Ziegfeld follies and was accepted becoming a glamourous chorus girl. Stanwyck then went on to star Broadway where she was discovered by a Hollywood talent scout. In the Broadway play ‘Burlesque’ Stanwyck had received rave reviews which had stood her in good stead.  Her first screen test was a success and , even though she didn’t get the part, had made quite an impression.  Her first major film success was ‘ Baby Face’ followed by many memorable films including ‘Golden Boy’ with William Holden and ‘Meet John Doe’ with Garry Cooper.  double indemnity2There was ‘Stella Dallas’ , ‘The Lady Eve’, and the cult classic ‘Double Indemnity’.  Stanwyck’s film career spanned twenty years and was followed with a brilliant career on television as the matriarch in ‘Big Valley’.

Barbara Stanwyck and Robert TaylorShe married Robert Taylor after two failed marriages.  Their marriage lasted for fourteen years and was a very happy one by all counts until the war changed everything.Stanwyck and Taylor Stanwyck and Cooper (Meet John Doe)_03 Apparently while Robert was away serving as an officer they both had affairs with other people and it was Barbara who filed for divorce.  They had had no children but Barbara had adopted a boy with her first husband named Dion.  She and her adoptive son had never been very close and perhaps this had something to do with the fact that both had been orphans.  Whatever the case there is no denying that Barbara Stanwyck was one hell of an actress and also very popular amongst her peers and co-stars.  A tough balancing act.  She was a lady who strived hard to be the best that she could possibly be and did not shrink away from competition.    Not bad for an orphan.

Vintage Hollywood baggage

Carol Lomabard and baggageYou can tell alot about a person from their baggage … er … luggage.  For instance a lady with too many suitcases must have too many clothes and therefore too much ego.  Right?  That sounds like an old Chinese proverb.  Maybe the lady has so much luggage because she’s simply indecisive or maybe she’s moving to a new city or maybe she owns a fashion boutique.  Maybe the cases are empty and she just wants you to think she has lots of outfits or maybe she intends to go on a buying spree and fill them with the new trends.  Sabrina and baggageWho knows?  We can however, guess more about the person from the style of luggage they carry, than from the content.  Louis Vuitton luggage is a dead give away and we automatically consider all who carry it to have class.  Many Hollywood stars chose Louis Vuitton and they carried it well. It meant they had taste and ,of course money. Marlene Deitrich and baggage Sometimes though a star could be just a little over the top and strike terribly glamorous poses with their luggage. This photo of Marlene Dietrich sitting on her luggage has more an air of Mafia than mystique.  Carole Lombard and Audrey Hepburn add a touch of elegance and decorum. While Audrey’s pooch adds a touch of irreverence. Well one does have to own one’s own baggage. Gene TierneyGene Tierney in her striped gloves uses hers to best advantage as a sort of podium on which to pose while pondering her next move. Gable and Colbert decide to keep it light so that they can hitch a ride in the movie ‘It Happened One Night’ , and Pickford and Fairbanks  return to their home  Gable and Colbert with baggage‘Pickfair’ from a long sojourn over seas with enough luggage to fill the whole train.  The porters seem a little daunted but Jerry Lewis saves the day. Essentially baggage is more than just empty cases filled with stuff.  Whatever goes inside is a reflection of self.  We can only imagine the glamorous outfits inside the cases of vintage stars but does what’s on the outside always reflect that which is within?  Mary Pickford and Doug Fairbanks baggagePickford and Fairbanks luggage here looks pretty rough around the edges.  They actually divorced not long after this was taken and their mansion sold. Jerry Lewis and baggage Nothing last’s forever but in the beginning there is always the hope that it will. The photo of Lizabeth Scott here on the porch with her only suitcase speaks volumes.  No girl that could afford such gorgeous designer clothes would travel with a single piece of  non descript luggage.  Think again. Annex - Scott, Lizabeth and cases Her character in this film has nowhere to go and is waiting outside a boarding house desperate and alone despite her designer duds. Is she waiting to enter or waiting to leave?  She certainly looks determined.  If , like me, you have carried your old baggage from last year into this one.  Marylin and baggageMaybe it’s time to get rid of some of it and be pro active.  Go forth, sashay into the world and be not afraid.  Even if you don’t fit into the mainstream be proud of who you are and be grateful for what you have.  Curtis and Lemon with luggageWe’ve all got baggage.
